The Ghana Project for Better Health:

Supporting the Peace Corps Work of Emma Gifford in Western Africa

St. Matthew’s member Emma Gifford is currently serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Ghana, Africa.  She has immersed herself in the local culture—learning from the elders and leaders about the economy, traditions and beautiful art.

Emma has learned that the most important need in the community is improved healthcare.  The local clinic serves over 13,000 people across 18 villages, yet it lacks basic resources—no laboratory testing, pharmacy, overnight observation, or even running water.  This is where families go to give birth, receive care after terrible accidents, and get support as elders fall ill.   There are four projects that are needed most:

a)          Clinic upgrades

b)         Lab equipment

c)          Clinic Borehole Mechanization – for running water

d)         Household latrines

St. Matthew’s is happy to join the effort to support Emma’s work and greater health in the Eastern Region of Ghana. We encourage you to prayerfully give to this lifesaving work through St. Matthew’s. You can donate on our website—select the “Ghana” option on our giving page. You may also write a check with “Ghana” in the memo line.

St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from which many of our social principles are based. A Vision and Mission Statement guide the people and ministries of St. Matthew’s.
